Usually, four or five different wines are tasted. You’ll also learn about terroir grape varieties, vinification and ageing cellars. Wine from made from vines dotted around the picturesque village of Chateauneuf-du-Pape has been renowned since the 14th century, when it was a favourite tipple of Pope John XXII. Indeed, the name would translate as ‘Newcastle of the Pope’. The ruins of a castle stand over the town to this day. If you take the tour on either a Monday or Tuesday, there will be visits to two separate domaines for the tastings. And if you take the tour on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday, it consists of one wine tasting tour and a visit of the Roman Theatre at Orange, some 15km away from Chateauneuf-du-Pape.
