It was originally built in 1716 and the first keeper was George Worthylake. He drowned along with his wife, daughter and two men while they were returning to the island in 1718. The building was destroyed and later rebuilt during the American Revolution. The Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area, in the outer harbour, is formed by a collection of islands, together with a former island and a peninsula. They are administered by the Boston Harbor Islands Partnership and are open for public recreation. Some of the islands are very small and best suited for wildlife.
