Boca Raton

Soak Up The Sophisticated Vibe in Boca Raton

When it comes to that idyll of cool sophistication with typically tropical overtones, beautiful Boca Raton has it in spades. Having started life as a boom town in the great Florida land expansion of the early 1920s, founded by renowned architect Addison Mizner, this uber-chic destination has maintained its air of cool refinement with effortless ease.

It is home to gorgeous beaches, magnificent resorts, beautiful parks and elegant shopping, an upscale exercise in holiday grace and style without being loud or snobbish. This is also the place to come for magnificent golf courses, headline concerts at Mizner Park Amphitheater and the culture of the Boca Raton Museum of Art.

Of course, there are plenty of beach-based activities, notably sailing, scuba-diving, fishing, parasailing and even fly-boarding, plus boat adventures of just about every kind, including catamarans, powerboats and party cruises, while you can head inland to try an airboat ride or eco-tour, visit the family-friendly Gumbo Limbo Nature Center and take a guided marsh tour or bird walk at Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge in nearby Delray Beach.

You will definitely want to check out some of the classy shopping that Boca is renowned for, with three major centres geared towards a distinctive retail experience. Royal Palm Place is known as the Pink Plaza to locals for its Mediterranean colour scheme and styling, with a mix of boutiques, restaurants, salons and spas, while the Town Center at Boca Raton is one of south Florida’s top luxury shopping destinations, boasting 220 stores from Apple to swanky Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Finally, Mizner Park is a modern nod to its founding father, a beautifully landscaped open-air mall and entertainment district specialising in nothing but the best, from its Lord and Taylor department store to Ruth’s Chris Steak House, and including its own cinema and outdoor performance centre.

All of this holiday grandeur can also be enjoyed at the five-star Boca Raton Resort & Club, a Waldorf-Astoria property originally designed by Mizner and dating back to the 1920s. Here, amid the Spanish-style halls and colonnades, there are enough activities to keep anyone busy for a week, accompanied by 13 restaurants, bars and lounges, seven swimming pools, a marina, award-winning Spa, tennis club and its own private beach club.

Cape Canaveral & Cocoa Beach

Enjoy the Space Coast at Cape Canaveral & Cocoa Beach

Be inspired on a three-part adventure to Florida’s Space Coast, centred on the Kennedy Space Center but also including some superb nature areas and all-action Cocoa Beach.

Start with Cape Canaveral and visit the famous Kennedy Space Centre Visitor Complex, one of Florida’s must-see attractions these days, with interactive exhibits depicting decades of space exploration as well as a superb showcase for the retired Space Shuttle Atlantis.

Also here is the 140,000-acre nature preserve of Merritt Island State Park, where you can see a wide slice of Florida animal life – including the ever-present alligators and some of the best bird-watching in the state – on the seven-mile Black Point Wildlife Drive.

Port Canaveral is departure point for several major cruise operators, and, even if you’re not heading to sea, you can enjoy this larger-than-life scene from the many harbourfront restaurants of the port’s The Cove area, where you’ll also find the eye-catching new Exploration Tower, a combined museum and observation platform.

For the seaside component hereabouts, Cocoa Beach is the happening beachfront epi-centre, a bustling stretch of family-friendly territory focused on its iconic Pier, offering plenty of hotel and restaurant choice and the signature shopping of Ron Jon Surf Shop, a 24-hour emporium dedicated to the surfing lifestyle.

Be sure to visit historic Cocoa Village for a lively mix of shopping and dining, take an eco-tour to see dolphins and manatees with Island Boat Lines, go kayaking through the splendid Thousand Islands conservation area and try that Floridian speciality of an airboat ride with Airboat Rides of Midway (and their pet pig, Porkchop!).

Clearwater and Beaches

Take A Trip To Seaside Heaven at Clearwater Beach

When Florida wants to dazzle you with its seafront charms, it will often push Clearwater Beach right to the forefront. And here’s why – this three-mile section of the glittering Gulf Coast boasts just about everything you need for beachy perfection.

Just to start with, this wide, gently-sloping section of golden sands is as inviting a coastal vista as you could summon up, with appeal for families and couples alike, all fringed with a terrific array of upscale resorts, like the Sheraton Sand Key and the highly-rated Sandpearl Resort, with its superb Caretta’s restaurant.

Beautiful Clearwater Beach not only has brilliant white sands but is also a hub of hubbub with a nightly celebration at Pier 60 filled with crafters, buskers and live music, a great place to watch the sunset.

Then consider a cornucopia of water-sports, eco-tours and other attractions based along the waterways, which include the essential Clearwater Marine Aquarium – home of Winter, the tail-less dolphin, and the nightly Sunset Celebration centred on Pier 60. Original restaurants also abound, most notably Crabby’s Dockside overlooking the Municipal Marina and the local institution of Frenchy’s Rockaway Grill, with its toes firmly in the sand.
